DOHA: The Doha Jazz Festival 2009, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and Movenpick Tower and Suites, will begin on February 11 at the Qatar National Theatre.

The five-day festival, which will start at 8pm, will present, together with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, four internationally-acclaimed jazz bands: the Ronald Baker Quintet from France, the Tricia Evy Trio from Guadeloupe, Manosh Bardhan and Debi Prasad Ghosh from India and French Alain Brunet, composer and trumpeter.

The Ronald Baker Quintet, which was formed in 1996, reveals a music style influenced by Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan. The quintet’s music is composed by musical director and pianist Alain Mayeras. The Tricia Evy Trio’s music is a dynamic fusion of jazz and beguine. The trio’s music is influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Billy Holiday.

Manosh Bardhan and Debi Prasad Ghosh present a fusion of different instruments. Each strain intertwines with another while maintaining its own strength, never overpowering or dominating. Providing the Indian element to the performance are Manosh Bardhan on the tabla and Debi Prasad on the sarod. French trumpeter and composer Alain Brunet has performed around the world and has created and directed band performances with stars like Clark Terry, Sonny Stitt, Lee Konitz and Martial Solal.

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, which aims to encourage great appreciation of classical music in the region and inspiring the reemergence of orchestral Arabian music, will be performing alongside the jazz bands. The orchestra is composed of 101 professional musicians, including the only Qatari in the group, Abdulazziz Al Haiduz.

Al Haiduz plays the Oud.

Other organisers of the event include Qatar Airways and the Centre Culturel Française.

The festival will begin with the tribute to Charles Trenet and Michel Legrand with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra at the Qatar National Theatre. Traditional Jazz sessions will be featured on February 12. On February 13, the audience will be treated to Jazz World Music — Arabic, Indian, jazz music from the United States, France and Guadeloupe.
