Location for pearl diving competition selected

The Qatar Marine Festival Organising Committee (QMFOC) has decided to set the oyster beds (Al Heerat), some 20-30km from the shore, for the GCC Traditional Pearl Diving Competition 2010, a senior official has said.

QMFOC general manager Hamad al-Tamimi said that the Technical Committee has discussed in detail a number of regulatory topics aiming at creating a competitive environment to enrich this heritage forum.
“The selection of the diving locations is based on the original diving locations in Qatari waters”, he said.

He also said that the selection of the “Al Heerat” was finalised after several visits and thorough evaluation by members of the Technical Committee.
He pointed out that the competition will be focused in ‘Al Rigga’, ‘Markhan’, ‘Al Jadoula’, ‘Al Oroudh’, ‘Al Dayah’, ‘Al Yammah’ and ‘Al Sath’ locations.

The selected ‘Al Heerat’ location differs in terms of breadth, depth and quality of the oysters. The competing dhows will be docked at the Al Banana island.

Maps will be distributed by the Technical Committee among the participating teams outlining the locations.

The Arabian Gulf states had more than 4,000 diving ships, in which divers moved near the western coast, which is characterised by shallow and pure water as well as a diverse sea life. “This guarantees abundant number of shellfish containing pearls.”

Qatar is known for a number of experienced divers, including Rashid bin Fadhel al-Binali, Nasr al-Nasr and his son Ibrahim bin Nasr, Salem bin Kedi, Shaheen bin Saleh al-Ghanem and Hassan bin Otaiba al-Shaer.
