Police bust 11-member ‘snuff powder’ gang
Some low-income workers who escaped their sponsors were part of a gang which manufactured a “snuff powder” whose use in Qatar is banned since it is an intoxicating substance.
Called ‘Swika’ in the local parlance, a gang of 11 members was busted by the Crime Prevention Department at the Ministry of Interior recently which manufactured and marketed this substance in the local market.
Acting on a tip-off, sleuths from the Department raided a place where the powder was manufactured using raw materials. The cops seized as much as 876 kilograms of ‘swika’ and its raw materials.
And in the gang were some low-income foreign workers who had escaped their sponsors and were declared absconding. They were staying in the country illegally.
All the 11 people who were rounded up are being referred for legal action after interrogation. The Department has in a release urged people to be on guard against such operators.
