Pearl pageant: showcasing the treasures of a glorious tradition
A pearls exhibition, which opened at the Museum of Islamic Art yesterday, showcases many treasures. The pride of the Qatar Museums Authority’s collection of pearls is a unique assortment that comprises the natural pearls of more than 10 different molluscs. The rarest of all is the large salmon-pink pearl at the top: it is the only known pearl of the emperor helmet (Cassis madagascariensis) from Florida. It measures 28.73 mm and weighs 111.5 carats.
