Museum of Islamic Art to open pearl expo

DOHA: The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is set to open its second temporary exhibition by the end of January and will continue until June 5. The exhibition on Pearls, will pay homage to the pearl fisheries in the Arabian Gulf and reveal an unknown world full of beauty and wonder.

MIA’s temporary exhibition will reopen on January 29 after the closing of the first edition, Beyond Boundaries- Islamic Art across Cultures, on February 22, 2009. Though the 750sqm state-of-the-art Temporary Exhibition Gallery on the ground floor of MIA was supposed to host an exhibition produced by the British Museum, Art and Empire, in April 2009 according to earlier announcements, it did not happen due to technical issues.

The museum has been putting its efforts into preparing to celebrate Doha-Arab Capital of Culture 2010, with exhibition. The exhibition wills be a journey into the kingdom of pearls, stressing on its value as a jewel and a beauty of its own.

The exhibition is also expected to showcase the traditional pearl hunting equipments and methodology, apart form some of the world famous and historic pearls. It is also learnt that a major private Qatari pearl collection will be exhibited.

As part of the expo, a number of activities also have been lined up by the Education Centre of MIA. This includes workshop for adult and children using drawings to explore and record the forms, shapes and colours of various types of pearls and shells. The museum’s monthly talk-Majlis of Knowledge and Art in February will focus on Pearl by Dr Hubert Bari.

The temporary exhibition gallery hosts prestigious exhibitions on various art themes in collaboration with various museums and galleries round the world. The first ambitious exhibition, as part of the project, was Beyond Boundaries- Islamic Art across Cultures, which was opened along with the museum.
