Qatar Worst Place for Making Friends With Locals

In a recent HSBC survey of how well expats mix with locals, Qatar ranked last out of 26 countries.

It only confirms what many expats know to be truth. While Qataris are often very friendly, we tend to move in different circles, have very different lifestyles - and have a vast cultural chasm that can be hard to bridge.

Yousra has also argued that Qatar men are very shy, putting up another barrier to integration.

What I have found from experience is that they tend to a bit reserved in their social approach. Its more to do with personality and culture. We have to realise that they were an intimate, close knit traditional society and suddenly all the economic boom happened, and a lot of foreigners flooded their country. We also would be wary at sudden change. I think the innate shyness tends to come across to people as standoffish-ness.
(Even  I feel quite adrift, guarded, and isolated in a crowd of strangers).

So give it time. Once they are comfortable with you they let their guard down.
With the few that I know, once you look beyond the costume, they are just as fun loving, simple minded folks as the rest of us.  

Once people realise that we share the same aspirations and dreams...a better life for ourselves and our families, it will be easier to get along.
