Pay delay, benefits denial top labour woes
Delay in paying salaries and denial of flight tickets and end-of-service benefits continued to be the most common complaints received by the Labour Ministry during the second quarter of 2009, according to a ministry report.
Such grievances comprised 53% of the complaints filed by workers.
Asian expatriates lodged 72% of the complaints, while other expatriates filed 15%.
Construction workers formed the largest number of complainants (35%), with those in the wholesale and retail sectors comprising 19% and workers in other sectors accounting for 31%.
According to the report, 43% of the complaints received during the second quarter were settled, 27% were closed and 11% referred to court.
The report said officials made 3,495 inspections to enforce labour laws. Of these, 538 were periodical checks while 2,888 were surprise inspections.
Health and safety inspectors also made 1,578 checks to ensure that firms comply with safety standards.
About expatriate women’s employment, the report said 1,115 licences were given to women under the sponsorship of relatives during the period.
The ministry also renewed 554 licences for working women.
