Qatar sets up supreme court

Qatar has set up a supreme court to review legislation and lower court rulings in what is being hailed as a “landmark move” for the country’s judicial system, local daily the Peninsula reported on Monday.

The Constitutional Court came into being on Sunday after a delay of almost a year due to “administrative reasons”, the newspaper said.

The court was originally meant to start operating from Oct. 1 last year, the paper added.

Court verdicts felt not in keeping with the law, the jurisdiction of lower courts, laws felt not in keeping with the country’s constitution and interpretations of the law can all be challenged in the Constitutional Court, the Peninsula reported.

Court decisions must be taken to the Constitutional Court within 60 days of being issued, the paper said.
