Museum to open education wing
As the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) completes one year in November, it is set to launch educational activities next month. Following the museum’s tradition of holding days of inaugural celebrations, the Education Wing will also witness week-long celebrations from October 10 to 15.
To mark the launch of the Education Wing, the MIA will hold inaugural programmes for families, schoolchildren, and other individuals to showcase and introduce a variety of activities, art workshops and training courses which would be offered at the museum from October 2009.
The wing will take the museum one step closer to fulfilling one of its objectives to establish Qatar as the nucleus of learning and information in the field of Islamic art. It will become an international resource for research, learning and creativity.
The Education Wing occupies 2,700 square metres. It is located much further from the main building so that the learners get a calm atmosphere to study, without getting distracted by the visitors to the museum.
The museum through its diverse range of programmes, educational material, library and community events aims to create learning experiences so that visitors can explore the past, understand the present and play a role in shaping the future. The programmes and material aim to help local communities play an active role in shaping their future by encouraging understanding and appreciation of Islamic art and heritage. Children will have fun-filled activities to enable them know more about the museum and Islamic art.
On the first floor of the Education Wing, is a library and research centre which has an extensive collection of books, periodicals and journals. The collections consists of specialised books on Islamic art, art reference books, museum collection and exhibition catalogues.
The wing will conduct workshops by artists and educators. Internship programmes for undergraduates and students pursuing graduation courses will also be offered.
